11 Personal Care Products To Stop Buying and Start Making
I probably don’t need to tell you that the majority of beauty and skincare products on the market today are full of some pretty unhealthy ingredients. I was completely oblivious of this fact until much later in my life.
I’d spent my life studying nutrition & health sciences and believed in the power of a healthy diet but was mindlessly continuing to slather on all sorts of products.
One day, I decided to do something very simple that has completely changed my life. I threw out anything that was made with ingredients I couldn’t recognize and started approaching beauty & skincare the same way I do nutrition.
What Is Wrong With Conventional Personal Care Products?
It might surprise you to hear that I don’t always believe 100% natural is best. There are countless natural DIY beauty hacks online that are actually very bad for your skin, body and overall health. I won’t go too much into those as I want to show you which ones I think are great to DIY instead.
Know that I only say this to make sure you don’t get excited and blindly follow what anyone suggests, including me! There are plenty of DIY blunders online and what works for me or your favorite beauty blogger might not work for you. So always do thorough research, patch-test and use common sense.
With that being said, most of the beauty and skincare products and DIY’s out there are inspired by the best parts of nature. Unfortunately, cosmetic manufacturers aren’t heavily regulated and terms like “organic” and “natural” don’t always mean what they suggest. It can be incredibly hard to tell what is inside those pretty bottles and if a product is safe or effective.
Here is a short video from the Environmental Working Group that explains what is currently happening in the cosmetics industry.
As more news surfaces concerning toxic chemicals being put into our favorite personal care, bath and beauty products, we are rightfully becoming more conscious about what we use on our skin.
Even the greenest most natural looking products are often not what they seem… Luckily there are more companies today making safer products but the price tag that comes with them isn’t always easy to swallow.
3 Reasons To Start Making DIY Personal Care Products
Natural DIY Reason #1
You Are What You… Put On Your Skin!
As the largest organ of our body, our skin absorbs everything we put on it. Think about transdermal medications like birth control and nicotine patches for a moment. If we didn’t effectively absorb what is on our skin these wouldn’t work! So you can imagine what happens when we put certain toxic chemicals on it. That doesn’t mean all ingredients are absorbed (your skin is your personal raincoat against water) but there are countless examples of chemicals that are of which
Natural DIY Reason #2
DIY Is Easier Than You Think
Some of the best DIY recipes have simple ingredients and are extremely easy to make. Most take only ten minutes! I buy a lot of my ingredients at my local market, organic food store or online and they last me a very long time.
Natural DIY Reason #3
It Will Save You So Much Money
Let’s be honest. Most of the time we are really paying for clever marketing and gorgeous packaging! A number of skincare companies like this one have come forward and admitted that products really shouldn’t be as expensive as they are being sold for. That doesn’t stop many of them from continuing to do so anyway! Say goodbye to ridiculous expensive body creams and say hello to natural long-lasting ingredients. I have compiled a list of conventional products that you can easily swap for healthier DIY options that won’t cost you a fortune but will make you feel good.
11 Personal Care Products To Start Making
The point of this article is not for you to throw all of your personal care and beauty products out this week or feel the need to replace everything immediately. Just like with a healthy diet, it is all about finding a healthy balance with products that you like and can stick with. I recommend starting with one or two products that either need replacement soon or that you use the most often. Enjoy!
Use your fingers to apply to your eyelid and under your eye, then gently remove with a cotton ball or reusable makeup remover pads. Remember to treat your skin, especially the more delicate skin around your eyes, with care to prevent from causing damage and premature aging.
I always wash my face with my favorite natural facewash after and would highly recommend you do this to prevent the oil from clogging up your pores. Yes, even coconut oil clogs your pores!
Natural DIY #2
Makeup Brush Cleaner
When was the last time you cleaned your makeup brushes? I don’t know about you but I was not always the best at doing this. What I did not realize was that dirty makeup brushes aren’t just gross but really bad for your skin and your health… Luckily, you can clean your brushes easily with a natural method that works perfectly!
Natural DIY #3
There are some horrid ingredients in conventional deodorants for both our health and the environment. Considering that I use this every day, I decided to go natural.
I tried SO many, because I couldn’t find any that worked. I always ended up grabbing my boyfriend’s spray deodorant after noticing certain looks… mostly from him haha! Try these DIYs and pre-made deodorants that really work.
Natural DIY #4
It is convenient, save hours of washing and styling but can also be a hidden source of toxins and horrible scalp problems. While it’s easier to just go out and purchase commercial products, most store-bought dry shampoos carry loads of harmful ingredients to both our health and our environment. You also won’t believe how simple and cheap it is to make your own natural dry shampoo! Seriously!
Natural DIY #5
Making a natural body wash is super easy and fun to make because you can customize the ingredients according to your skin type and smell preferences.
It is also one of those ingredients that are ridiculously expensive to buy in stores and can be made naturally, eco-friendly and totally luxurious in a matter of minutes. These are the natural body washes I like making.
Natural DIY #6
The idea of people still paying for expensive bath salts almost makes me mad, haha! Making homemade bath salts is SUPER easy and you get to customize it in whatever way you’d like. I love taking infused salt baths as they relax me, clear up my skin, and support me with all sorts of things like PMS, trouble sleeping, sore muscles, and so much more.
Natural DIY #7
Sea Salt Hair Spray
If you’ve ever bought over 10 or even 20 euros worth of sea salt hairspray, I am so sorry you didn’t come across this post sooner! Time to stop paying for glorified salty water and make your own!
Natural DIY #8
I absolutely love beautiful fragrances and the perfume industry has mastered this. There is something about smelling good that can make you feel like a million bucks. Making your own perfume is a great way to save money, avoid potentially harmful chemicals, and get your own amazing personal scent.
Natural DIY #9
Lip balm is a product most of us can’t possibly live without. What is great is that you can make a super hydrating and healthy lip balm yourself with just a few simple ingredients.
Natural DIY #10
Hand Soap & Sanitizer
Hand soap and sanitizer formulas often carry ingredients like the endocrine disrupter triclosan that are unhealthy for people and polluting to our environment after we wash it down the drain. It is also a SUPER easy swap to make.
Natural DIY #11
One of the reasons I became obsessed with beauty products was to obtain the perfect skin I always saw on tv and in magazines. I never realized that a lot of the acne products were actually aggravating my skin and making it worse! I’ve also found some pretty unconventional tips and products that help me keep my skin clear.
